One reason for the city’s growth and prosperity is the presence of railroads. In the 1870s, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad purchased 647 acres in Ellis County and established the northern terminus of their line. This small town became the first town in Texas. The population has risen every year, and the city is home to 53 major manufacturers. The Ennis Daily News, founded in 1891, is the only paper still in print today.
During the early 1900s, the population of Ennis grew from 300 to 3,050. This growth was due to new settlers coming from the Confederate States of America and war-torn European nations. Cotton production in the region made the town a center for commerce and trade. The influx of Czech immigrants contributed to the area’s cultural heritage. At the same time, Ennis hosted the first NHRA O’Reilly Fall Nationals in the city. find out here
